October 19 :: Side B, Interview with author, Canyon Sam

Canyon Sam is a San Francisco – based writer and performance artist. Her creative nonfiction, plays and articles have appeared in many publications. She also wrote on Tibetan issues for Agence France Presse.

She has worked as an activist for Tibetan independence and human rights. She addressed a Congressional sub-committee hearing after Tiananmen Square, hosted and co-produced a cable television show on Tibet, and began creating and performing one-woman theater. Her solo performances, exploring contemporary issues through the lens of Buddhist practice have drawn national acclaim. Her book Sky Train recently won the Pen American Center 2010 Award.

Ms. Sam earned an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from San Francisco State University and has taught at colleges and universities throughout the Bay Area.

She will be a part of SALTAF this year, November 13 at the Baird Auditorium at the Natural History Museum
