hotographs taken by Gauri across the United States from 2000 to 2007, Gauri Gill’s exhibition documents the Indian population as it has settled across the country – in rural areas, small towns, and big cities – both retaining its traditional signifiers of Indian identity and merging within a larger American plurality. The resulting color photographs are simultaneously humorous, poignant, ironic, and beguiling. Gill’s portrayal of her subjects and their lives emerges through her strict attention to detail and sympathetic juxtapositions

Kavitha Rajagopalan has worked in international finance and development, and as a journalist in India, Germany, and the United States. She received a Master’s degree in International Affairs from Columbia University, and a Bachelor’s degree in International Relations from the College of William & Mary. She received a Fulbright scholarship in 2003, and the John J. McCloy Journalism Fellowship in 2004. She lives in Brooklyn, NY with her husband, Matthew Young, who designed the cover for her book. Kavitha Rajagopalan is a Senior Fellow at the World Policy Institute
